This wine is singing loud! Matrot's wines, both red and white, can be powerful and backward in their youth. Their Corton-Charlemagne can take yours before even expressing a little bit of its personality. Their reds had been the same for a long time but in many cases even more austere. When you take the already backward wines coming from Beaune, which are beautiful but can be polarizing, and you add that to Matrot's power it would be hard to drink for a long while. That has changed! A new approach to the reds has made them much more approachable in a handful of years vs. a decade. This great premier cru is the perfect example of how power can combine with elegance. Blagny is a hamlet within Meursault. There is the Meursault-Blagny white, but for Pinot Noir, it is called "Blagny". The same mineral soil that gives the wine intensity for reds and white is at the heart of this one. At six years of age, it is showing its ample fruit, mineral texture, and some newer wood to round it all out. A drinker and a keeper.

Vincent Paris has risen to great heights in Cornas in both vineyards and accolades. He produces three different wines from Cornas, and they aren't about good, better, or best. They are about location and aspect. La Geynale is his small plot which has the darkest fruit and is blended with some of the heralded Reynard vineyard. The other two wines are named solely on their slope and elevation. Those wines are called "Granit 30" and "Granit 60". The number is the degrees of the slope, and of course, the soil is the special granite that is so heralded in Cornas. This "Granit 30" is cropped to 4 bunches per vine and this concentrates the already amazingly concentrated fruit of his wines. They have a bit of new world flare with this intensity, but the wines scream Cornas on the nose and palate.

When we talk about the best real estate the higher up you go the better you are generally speaking, but not so with Burgundy. Most of the best sites are in the middle of the slope, perfect for soil and temperature...this is definitely something that is changing. The tops of the slopes have traditionally been too cool, and broken soils tended to produce wines slated as simple Bourgogne. However, one of Burgundy's famed producers has been producing from a Monopole vineyard that has been a standout for years. With climate change more and more are investing in this area, but Méo-Camuzet has been rooted here because they knew! This Chardonnay is from the top of the slope that looks over the most heralded vineyards in Burgundy - right above Échézeaux. It has richness and freshness, crisp minerality, and the perfect toasty balance of oak. LIke all of their wines, this is a Méo-Camuzet you need to grab now!

We have offered a couple of different wines from Domaine de Collier and they have both been the estate's amazing Chenin Blanc. This time we get the privilege of offering you one of his amazing reds. La Ripaille is made with Cabernet Franc from vines that range from 30 to 80 years of age. The only other red Antoine produces is "Charpentrie" from 100+ aged vines. The wines are made completely organic, and for added protection, there is a 12th-century wall that separates his vines from the neighbors - so no chemicals can reach his vines. This wine is like Burgundy, but Cabernet Franc. Layers, upon layers of fruit, herbs, and spice join together in this wine to make for a beautiful bottle. You want a wine for your spring vegetable dishes with added meat - this is what you need!

Jean Foillard is the shepherd of Morgan. Every year releasing wines that are so incredibly stellar, and when compared to the top domaines in Burgundy we wonder how they are so accessible with their prices. They not only have amazing flavor but incredible ageworhtiness. This wine and the rare "Pi" can go a decade or more.

"This estate comprises nearly fourteen hectares. Foillard’s Morgons are deep, structured, and complex, with a velvety lushness that makes them irresistible when young despite their aging potential. Jean raises his wines in older barrels sourced from top estates in Burgundy, a logical decision for someone crafting Gamay in a Burgundian style. It is the passion and dedication of vignerons like this that have brought pride back to the crus of the Beaujolais."

These holdings allow Jean to make some of the best wines in the appellation. The "Cuvée Corcelette" is a vineyard located on sandstone that gives the wines great depth, and power. I have had examples fifteen years old that are still babies, yet when I drink this wine young I always smile. The complexity blows me away every time I pull a cork. The nineteen is no different - it has all the stuffing you could want like a stocking on Christmas morning.

François is a master of the terroirs in Givry, one of the appellations in the Côtes Châlonnaise. This region has never had full recognition of the great wines that are produced here, and François is truly poised to show his friends to the north in the Côte d'Or that Givry is alive and kicking. This single plot Chardonnay has crisp fruit and an amazing chalky minerality which is reminiscent of great Chablis. It is aged for a year in wood, only 30% of which is new, and this wraps it up in a perfect little bow of balance. Givry will have its recognition, but until then we can still get Lumpp's great whites!

Our wine today, one of the best values we discovered in 2021 and a by-the-glass offering at Four Eleven in Seattle, is made from the younger wines of Terrebrune's vineyards. The wine labeled "Terre d'Ombre" is spectacular. Composed of 80% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, the wine is perfect for Tuesday dinner as well as a celebratory Sunday supper. It has richness and finesse. A combination of fresh, vibrant fruit, along with flavors of a strawberry/raspberry chutney with the perfect amount of spice. With eight years of age it is drinking like a wine 5 times its price - and it is perfect on its own, too.

Cassis was first planted to the vine in the 12th century and the vineyards were developed on the north, east and southeast slopes that surround the village which sits immediately on a little bay on the Mediterranean; thus, the perfect circumstances for marrying wine to the bounty of the sea! Phylloxera wiped out the vineyards in 1870 but by 1892 the citizens of Cassis had re-established their vineyards but this time without the Muscatel variety.

This Domaine was owned by the same family for generations until relatively recently. The property had fallen prey to an issue that affects many long-standing wineries - the family has no heirs to take over, and sadly the wines were affected by less than optimal winemaking. Jean-Louis Genovesi, a native of Cassis who had departed for Paris and made his fame (and a few centimes as well) in the capital. Jean-Louis and his son, Sébastien, have revived the domaine and the wines, both blanc, and rosé are more compelling than ever. The domaine sits just beneath the imposing limestone outcropping of Cap Canaille and is a mere 200 meters distance from the shores of the Mediterranean. Thus situated, the Domaine du Bagnol is the beneficiary of the cooling winds from the north, northwest, and northeast (Tramontane, Mistral, and grégal) as well as the gentle sea breezes that come ashore.

The Rosé is produced from several parcels that comprise slightly less than 7 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are clay and limestone, situated on a gentle slope with a north–northwest exposure. The blend is Grenache (55%), Mourvedre (31%) and Cinsault (14%). It is so fresh and brilliant. Flavors of dried berries, and provincial herbs. It drinks like a delicate red, but has the elegance of a beautiful rosé.

This is their workhorse white wine. It comes from 2ha of vineyards from a few different parcels around the village of Savigny, which were chosen for their higher limestone content, which is just a bit of red clay gravel. The wine sees no more than 20% new oak and is fierce with acidity and minerality.

This is the closest we will probably ever get to carrying a wine that would be considered a "Natural Wine" in the context of the trend. However, this Chateau in St. Emilion has been making their wines the same way for decades, so they aren't following any trend - just making great wine.

They focus on only indigenous yeasts, no sulfur use, but great care is taken to make sure it isn't a wine full of funk. In years when it is needed, they will use sulfur, as making a wine that tastes good is more important than being a part of the current "thing". There is a wonderful richness from the Merlot in this wine, but the Cabernet Franc is truly the lead singer. The flavors of black olive, savory herbs, and a wonderful rich fruit cover your palate, with a long finish. This is classic Bordeaux at its best.

This Bourgogne Rouge is from a single vineyard above the town of Savigny on a hillside, which makes it fall outside the village appellation. Don’t be deceived by “Bourgogne,” as this single plot’s average age of vines is 48 years old, and the wine is treated like all of the village, premier, and grand crus.
