Long gone are the days of Orsen Wells hawking gallon jugs of California “Chablis” for Paul Masson, calling it ‘America’s most loved wine.” While a few California companies were grandfathered to use the name “Chablis,” true Chablis can only come from the Burgundy region of France. Orsen did kinda get one thing right - it is very loved today. If we hosted a BYOB for ten wine professionals, we would put the over/under of the Chablis bottles brought at four. Great Chablis is all about acid and earth - two components that are incredibly yummy as well as food versatile.

This Chablis from Domaine Jolly is sure to be that Chablis go to...

Now for something completely different - the Roussillon, a rugged area of mountains and beaches on the Spanish border. There is a fascinating history to the region. Rumors abound that the Phoneceans brought vines to the area around 600 BC. Many think the Roussillon is the birthplace of Grenache, the found grape of the Southern Rhone.

Our desire for white wine rises as spring approaches, especially for crispy, acid-driven earthy wines. The Loire Valley is the perfect place for these wines. Most wine drinkers are familiar with Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. But the initiated drinker goes to Chenin Blanc, to Vouvray, Savennieres, and more recently Saumur. This region is not unknown, however. It's a world-class area for Cabernet Franc, with the most famous name being Clos Rougeard, an ethereal example of the variety. But in recent years, winemakers have recognized that Chenin Blanc can also be world-class, both complex and refreshing.

This vineyard is one of their youngest, with the average age being 27 years old. It is planted on rocky soils, which surround a rock quarry - exposing the look of this amazing terroir. The wine is always 90-95% Chardonnay, and the difference is comprised of Pinot Gris - most in Burgundy don’t admit this when they make white, but they know how it adds richness without adding new oak.

For the first time ever, Sauvignon Blanc is having success globally, not just in the wines of Marlborough, New Zealand. Many people's palates have moved to fresher varieties and styles of winemaking instead of the rich, concentrated, heavily oaked white wines. We see that in the shop, as more people are drinking crisp varieties from Italy, Greece, Austria, Germany, and France. Included in France is the true home of great Sauvignon Blanc - the Loire Vally.

Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are the gold standards for the purest examples of Sauvignon Blanc with both fruit and mineral intensity. Sancerre has pure chalk Kimmeridgian soil which gives its zing-like texture. Just across the way is Pouilly-Fumé, which also has the beautiful Kimmeridgian soil but also flint mixed in. This additional layer of soil adds a great intensity level to the knows - one which is like using a firestarter while camping.

Régis Minet is a second-generation winemaker at what was his family's estate and is now his own. With forty harvests of experience, he knows the land and has the ability to morph with the years. In a time when many are pushing ripeness to fit into a specific profile, he works the wine to fit the land - keeping true to the classics of the region. His wines have intensity, a lean, dry citrus rind character, along with a zip of terroir which almost makes the center of your tongue numb. In my years of building wine lists, it is a wine that has always been a staple because it is such a standout from the Loire - period. Another perfect porch sipper which goes with all the amazing spring and summer vegetables, any type of goat cheese, and yummy smoked fish.

When many hear "Beaujolais," they only think of the historical pink bubblegum juice flown on the Concorde on the third Thursday of November. Definitely not what we are talking about here. Beaujolais in the past decade underwent a revolution, with many new wineries and a massive leap in quality. Today, the region is not only one of the best values globally; there are many world-class examples capable of long-term aging.

This premier cru vineyard is within Savigny but is right above the village of Pernand - running contiguous with Pernand Vergelesses. Marl and limestone soil gives this wine fragrance and power. This is the only red that undergoes 80% whole cluster because the one tank used for their small plot isn’t big enough to ferment 100% whole cluster.

We obviously love Syrah - a lot. Both founders of 411 have many acres of Syrah planted in Walla Walla. When not drinking the great wines of Washington, we always look to the Rhone Valley, to Cote Rotie, Hermitage, and St Joseph. St Joseph might not be at the top of everyone's lips regarding the best Syrah appellations. Truth be told, unlike Cote Rotie and Hermitage, some St Joseph sites are sub-par. The region is large, twisting and turning as it follows the Rhone river south. Many vineyards are simply planted in the wrong spot  - on lesser soils or facing the wrong direction. So quality is variable. However, another class of St Joseph exists. Grown in the right place, most likely at the most southern end of the appellation, near Hermitage,  the wines rival or exceed the best of the Northern Rhone's most famous areas.

SKU: Thierry Allemand "Reynard" Cornas

To add to our rarities today we offer you one of the most sought-after red wines from the Northern Rhône - Thierry Allemand Cornas "Chaillot". The Chaillot is comprised of vines from Chaillot, as well as some of the "Younger" vines from Reynard. Younger is a relative term, as the average age of vines going into this bottling is 40 years old. The Reynard vineyard is substantially older than that if that is any indication of Thierry's vines' ages. Those who know Allemand can rest assured you can't find this many places. We get our special few bottles and pass them along to you. These go for decades and have been some of our best wine experiences ever.
