In some parts of the world, like New Zealand or Sancerre, producers can't keep up with the demand for Sauvignon Blanc. But in the Grande Dame areas of Bordeaux, for whatever reason, the region is still trying to find its identity. Maybe it's because the excitement for the reds overshadows the whites, or perhaps there has been a lack of focus for white - with low acidity and too much oak. However, there are incredible Sauvignon Blanc discoveries to be had for those who search.

The Couhin name on a wine label can lead to confusion, even for experienced Bordauex drinkers, as there are multiple properties with the Couhin's name. The property was started in the 1700s, for red wines only. Along the way, white wines were introduced and eventually became the focus. In the 1955 classification of Graves, the property received Cru Classe status, a huge honor. Unfortunately, the property fell into disrepair in the late 1960s and was divided into two properties Chateau Couhin and Chateau Couhin-Lurton, purchased by famed Andre Lurton. Chateau Couhin fell into disrepair and decline after the split. In 2007, Lurton purchased Chateau Couhin and re-established the property, again producing wines under the name Chateau Couhin. As complex as that sounds, basically what we have is a fantastic property now being made by fantastic producers. And one of the best Sauvignon Blanc values anywhere in the world. The Couhins 2016 Blanc gives up lime zest, orange blossom, and grapefruit notes with wafts of crushed rocks and wild thyme. Medium-bodied, tightly wound, and very refreshing, it delivers wonderful intensity and purity with a long steely finish. -- Lisa Perrotti-Brown Wine Advocate
